The “Sankofa Collection” is a set of immersive archival garments which leaned on Black historical events and aesthetics, each featuring an exclusive augmented reality experience attached. The collection applies the principle of Sankofa, demonstrating a return to cultural principles within a technology environment which often favors constant progression. By leaning on aesthetic language and meaning-making practices of Aaron Douglas’ Fire Magazine illustration, the Spiral arts alliance (Romare Bearden, Charles Alston, Norman Lewis, and Hale Woodruff), and more, it invites a new dimension to sharing stories and archives by placing the wearer as the keeper of the augmented reality story.
